Sagan
Domestic Rat
Our domestic rat,
Sagan is named
after Matt's hero -
astronomer and
science popularizer,
Carl Sagan. Rats are probably not
everybody's favorite little animal, but a lot of our favorites like eagles, owls,
wild cats and foxes, to name just a few, would not be around without the
rats and other rodents they need to eat to survive! Rats also do a
tremendous job of spreading seeds for all the plants and trees that make our
world so beautiful. While it is more than okay not to want rats in your house,
it's pretty important that we have these valuable little guys around on Earth.
Rats are masters of survival. They survive on almost every continent of the
world, in almost every habitat. And they really are incredible little atheletes.
They are excellent at jumping, climbing, even swimming. They can balance
on tiny little branches and tightropes. And usually perform all these stunts
in the dark, running the whole way to avoid those predators! After you
meet Sagan in a
Wonders of Nature show, and see just how smart and
athletic these misunderstood creatures can be, we're sure you will agree
that "rats rule"!
